FREI LUIZ DE SOUSA
Depois do brilhantissimo livro «Viagens na minha terra», de que os maiores escriptores, como Rebello da Silva, Castilho, Gomes d'Amorim, Theophilo Braga, etc., disseram ser um monumento immorredouro da litteratura portugueza, a melhor obra de Garrett é, sem contestação, o «Frei Luiz de Sousa». Vegezzi Ruscalla, na revista «Cornelia» de Florença, diz, a pag. 180, que Portugal tem no auctor do «Frei Luiz de Sousa» o seu Goethe, o seu Byron, o seu Lamartine e o seu Manzoni, ajuntando: «Questo drama é un vero capolavoro». A. P. Lopes de Mendonça («Memorias da litteratura contemporanea», Lisboa 1855) escreveu: «…talvez pareçam demasiadamente singelos os dados d'esta funebre tragedia, e todavia cremos que a litteratura moderna não possue monumentos de mais superior e acabado molde…» Th. Braga («Questões de litteratura e arte portugueza», Lisboa 1882, pag. 384) chama-lhe tragedia unica, e sem rival nas litteraturas modernas. Rebello da Silva acha que as scenas do terceiro acto do «Frei Luiz de Sousa» são as mais tragicas que conhece, e o quarto acto é o maior esforço dramatico de que tem noticia.
«Frei Luiz de Sousa» tem tres traducções francezas; está tambem vertido em hespanhol, italiano, inglez e allemão. Foi representado em Paris. Muito se tem escripto sobre a grandiosa tragedia, sendo a ultima producção—«Frei Luiz de Sousa» de Garrett—Notas com um prefacio de Th. Braga, por Joaquim d'Araujo.
