No que elle se enganava era em imaginar que o governo do Principe Regente, tao com- pletamente inteirado da orientagao britannica na materia, encarasse a ingenua hypothese de solicitar a Inglaterra a auxilial-o no ultimar pacificamente em seu beneficio a em- preza em questao, que o representante da administragao de Madison julgava com razao favorecida por uma circum- stancia tal como a antipathia entre Montevideo e Buenos Ayres.
Esta antipathia Ihe parecia comtudo mais superficial do que profunda e, desconfiando como todo Americano de entao da sua antiga metropole, nao se Ihe afigurava por contra facil prognosticar infallivelmente os designios da Gra Bre- tanha sobre as colonias hispano-americanas, caso assumisse a direccao d estas ( I ) pela provada incapacidade da Hespanha e os estorvos levantados a accao portugueza no Rio da Prata. Nao se furtou no emtanto a corte do Rio a tentar converter o gabinete de Saint-James a sua politica no tocante a Regen- cia hespanhola, o que ate certo ponto equivalia a regulagao da fronteira do Prata.
